Andy Filkins reveals why innovation is the key to a improved value instrumentation by providing several examples of operational systems of Rotork instruments that efficiently increase safety of production process. In a business sector, especially the oil and gas industries, cost management is one of the greatest priorities since it is directly related to profit generation. In order to reduce operational costs, optimize output and also to ensure the safety of operation, oil and gas industries are initiated to utilize value systems. The article provided an example of emergency shutdown values, named partial stroke test (PST), which is expected to ensure the value system works according to the site’s safety standard. PST is a critical procedure as end users do not want a failure to cause a shutdown of their operation. PST can be performed in various ways: mechanical, electronic, electric and pneumatic. Under the utilization of PICO control system, a completely innovative solution has been devised, which is integrating ultra-fast, zero bleed solenoid values, high flow capacity filter boosters and a dedicated electronic control. This innovative way of adopting a new type of controlling system apparently enhances performance by ensuring the continuity of production.
